Why your handbag's accessory is having a bigger moment than the handbag itself

Bag charms aren't a passing novelty — they're one of the more interesting shifts in accessories right now, and the "why" says a lot about how people want to relate to the things they carry.

For the past couple of years, charms rode the wave of collectible characters (think Labubu) hanging off everything from tote bags to backpacks. That wave has crested. Fashion commentators are now pointing to charm fatigue with mass-market characters — when everyone's bag says the same thing, the charm stops doing its job. The response from the industry has been telling: houses like Chloé used their Spring/Summer 2026 runway to introduce their own charm pieces, moving the category from "cute add-on" toward considered, tactile design.

What's replacing the one-size-fits-all character is something more personal: charms chosen for what they mean to the owner, not what's trending that week. A bag charm has become, as one fashion writer put it, "the cheapest way to change what your bag says" — a small, low-commitment piece of self-expression on an otherwise considered investment. It's also part of a broader texture-forward, tactile moment in accessories, and a nod to an older habit that predates any of this: the Birkin-era practice of stacking a few meaningful charms on one bag rather than wearing a single statement piece.

For us, that shift lines up naturally with what we already believe about craft: a bag should say something specific about the person carrying it, not be identical to everyone else's. Every Winklmayr piece is made by hand from ostrich or crocodile leather, in small runs, by a family three generations into this work — the opposite of mass-produced sameness.

Which is why, this National Handbag Day, we're giving every handbag — online or in-store — a hand-stitched exotic-leather Alpaca charm of its own. Saturday, 10 October, one day only, no code needed. Each charm's colour is allocated at random, so no two people walk out with quite the same combination — which, if the trend data is right, might be exactly the point.
